What happened to falling in love with character?
For once, let's all be honest. Looks matter. It's all over everywhere we go. All those skinny girls in Victoria's Secret and all those guys with muscular bodies flaunting their good-gracious-vanity at all magazines and billboards and television and at literally everything. Society succeeded in making us believe that these are what we should settle for. And we get okay with that. We accept that because we live in a society where everyone is a conformist. What we see and hear, we absorb. So it becomes the universal truth. Thinking it over, when, since absolutely when did we ever stop falling in love with character?
I get it. No one falls in love with personality at first sight. It's always the outside that comes first. Someone made that head of yours turn because they were interesting to you. It may be because they've got a nice hair or teeth or the way they were dress. Maybe it was their eyes or the way they walk and smile that brightest smile. I guess it's easier like that, falling in love with the things you see right away. But then maybe, that's the problem. We get so drawn in their physical looks that's why when their hair is no longer nice and their eyes and smile become dull, we no longer stick around and eventually, we leave. We forego the chance to find out the things that really matter. The things that keep everything together.
So you love them, yeah, because they've got swag and and can pull off any clothes on trend. Or because they have a fancy car to drive you with. Or because they basically crossed out all the items on your "ideal partner qualities list". Maybe these are the things that make us like them but what about their character?
The way they talk to the professors, the guards, the waiters, or to just everyone, basically. What are the music they listen to? The books they read? Or if they ever read a single book in their life. The movies they watch? What are the things that moved them? Do they have any goals? What are their fears? Does family take a huge part in their lives? What are the reasons behind their scars? Or the thoughts that keep them at night? What are the things that comprise their being? What's their story?
Sure we get fascinated with looks but it's what's inside them that make us love them. That's what keeps the both of you together. Well, at least for me. Most of the time, I try and figure people out in the littlest things like the way they get along with kids or their family or the opinions they have about the happenings around us or even down to the simplest way of how they like their coffee to taste like. One Direction said it best in one of their songs, "I'm in love with you and all these little things". There's a lot to know if we just pay attention. After all, as cliche as it sounds, it is always the little things that impact us the most. So I keep asking myself whenever I meet someone interesting and get to know them, is this person more or less than the sum of his/her parts?
There are probably a thousand reasons why falling in love with character is very rare now. To cut to the chase, I guess what I'm trying to say here is that when it happens, that you find yourself falling in love with someone, I hope that you fall in love because they are beautiful. Not the society-made-up beautiful but beautiful inside. Fall in love not because of their tantalizing eyes but the way those eyes see the good in others; fall in love with the way those eyes sparkle when they see the simple things that make them happy; fall in love not because of their soft lips but for the stream of sincere words that come out of them; fall in love with the words they say about things they are passionate about; fall in love not because of their captivating smile but for the reasons behind it; fall in love not because they have good deal with money but in the way they worked and earned it and for the reasons they want t use it for; and fall in love not only with the things they are saying but more importantly, also for the things they can't say but only felt through their eyes.
Fall in love with their depth. They way their thoughts are made up and create words of truth and honesty. Fall in love with their flaws and their sadness. Fall in love with their compassion and courage. Fall in love because they have a good heart that's capable of giving out to the world a great love. Fall in love with their entire being. Fall in love because they make you feel more of yourself. Because they make you feel you deserve all the best. Fall in love because they make you feel beautiful, and fall in love with the beauty that is not temporary, but to the beauty that is deep down their soul.
